Why Scores Hidden In Pokemon Unite.Pokémon Unite, The Pokémon Company’s and Tencent Games’ owned TiMi Studios’ free-to-play MOBA, is still going well. The game, which debuted on the Nintendo Switch in July and later ported to mobile devices in September, has received seasonal updates that include new features such as a spacesuit for Gengar and a stylish Blastoise.
The dresses, however, are only a small part of the pleasure. The game includes a competitive environment that is appropriate for a top-down competitive arena game.
It’s a simple game at its core: you play in 5v5 teams, collecting points that you can then deposit in the opposing team’s goal. The 10-minute bouts go swiftly, and depending on your MOBA experience, some of the matches can soon become one-sided.
You never see the score during an ongoing match, the eventual results of a match unexpected. The ultimate score only revealed in the conclusion. Players are notified of generalised signals such as “We have a massive lead!” and “We’re REALLY struggling!” instead of a specific score board.

In an interview with the makers, Kotaku writer Ethan Gach questioned Masaaki Hoshino, the game’s producer, about why the scoreboard hidden from players.
“Because the games are just 10 minutes long and players have the chance to make a comeback,” Hoshino explained, “we wanted them to play until the very end.”
It makes reasonable that the lack of a scoreboard prevents individuals from giving up and quitting. In Pokémon Unite, mechanics like beating Zapdos — which can drastically reduce the amount of time it takes to score — can suddenly shift the tides. One or two competitors with a lot of points can insta-score and dramatically change the game. You don’t give up too quickly if you don’t know the score.
Although hearing that your team is “REALLY struggling” may not be the most inspiring news, it may be preferable than watching a significant margin widen.
