How CPU Air Coolers Work

How CPU Air Coolers Work When it comes to picking a cooling solution for your new processor, air cooling is one of the most realistic solutions to consider. For its versatility and ease of usage, air cooling is a favourite of many DIY PC enthusiasts. How do most of these air coolers operate, though? In this essay, we’ll try to answer that question.

The Basics of CPU Cooling

How to choose the best CPU cooler for you - Newegg Insider

The majority of coolers on the market, whether bespoke liquid coolers, AIO liquid coolers, or air coolers, operate on the same concept. They cool CPUs by removing the heat created by the CPU and dispersing it throughout the environment. Following the basic principles of thermodynamics, this raises the temperature of the environment.

The way heat is transferred away from the CPU makes a difference in how these coolers operate. Let us concentrate on air coolers for the sake of this paper.

How Air Coolers Dissipate Heat From the CPU

Copper heat pipes are found in most CPU air coolers. The number of heat pipes in an air cooler can range from four in some low-cost models to eight in some high-end models. The IHS (Integrated Heat Spreader) of the CPU may or may not come into direct contact with these heat pipes. The CPU contact in the first case is constructed of aluminium (since direct contact designs are found in most budget options). The heat from the IHS is absorbed by this aluminium CPU block, which then distributes it to the copper heat pipes. The heat is then transferred to a massive aluminium heat spreader via these copper heat pipes. The copper pipe travels through a series of aluminium fins on this aluminium heat spreader. Fins are cut into the block to save production costs and improve surface area.

The face of the aluminium fins is attacked by a fan, which is utilised to blast the heat away from the cooler and transfer it to the air. Using a pressure gradient established by the case fans, the hot air is subsequently carried out of the computer case.
